If you've looked into therapy in Fort Worth, you may have seen the term "Bowen Family Systems Theory," or BFST. It sounds technical, but the idea behind it is simple: you cannot fully understand a person without understanding their family.
As a marriage and family therapist trained in this approach, I use BFST every day with individuals, couples, and families. Here's what it means, and why it might be a good fit for you.

The Main Idea
Most people think of emotional problems as something that lives inside one person. Bowen theory sees it differently. It looks at the family as one connected emotional system — like a mobile hanging above a crib. Move one piece, and every other piece shifts too.
This means:
Your anxiety may not just be "yours." It may be connected to patterns in your family.
A conflict between you and your partner often has roots going back generations.
Change in one family member can create change in the whole system.
Differentiation of Self
One of the most important ideas in BFST is called differentiation of self.
In simple terms, this means learning to:
Stay connected to the people you love
While still holding onto your own thoughts, values, and identity
Even when things get emotionally tense
People with a higher level of differentiation can stay calm and think clearly during conflict, instead of reacting on pure emotion. This is a skill — and it can be learned at any age.
Why This Matters for You
You don't need a family history degree to benefit from this approach. In session, this might look like:
Understanding why you react a certain way in arguments
Seeing patterns that repeat across generations
Learning to respond instead of react
Building stronger, calmer relationships — with your partner, your children, or yourself
How I Use This in My Practice
My approach is rooted in Bowen Family Systems Theory. I tailor each session to fit you, whether you're coming in alone, as a couple, or as a family.
I work with individuals, couples, and families across many backgrounds, including LGBTQAI2S+ clients, neurodivergent clients, and Spanish-speaking clients. My goal is always the same: help you find clarity, calm, and connection with yourself and with the people who matter most.
